Reece could tell Ben was waiting. Waiting for an explanation.

Closing his eyes, he held onto Ben tightly for a moment before pulling

back and diving right into it.

“I didn’t mean to lie.”

“To me, or to them?” There was no heat in Ben’s words, but they

still stung nonetheless.

Reece moved to sit on the couch, and Ben sat next to him. “Both,”

he replied quietly. “I exaggerated certain parts of my career to them.

It’s just an insecurity thing, ever since I came out to them.”

“They didn’t take it well?”

“They were alright; they just… became a little distant. Like they

didn’t know how to act around me anymore, you know?”

Ben nodded, though he didn’t really know. “Well, they seem

great with you now; I mean your dad has a scrap book of all your

achievements, for God’s sake.” He grinned.

“I know, it’s cute, right?” Reece smiled. “He’s always done stuff

like that. That’s why I think it hurt a little when that stopped for a

while, just a little while, when I told them I was gay. It wasn’t

malicious, it was just the unknown. Am I making sense?”

“Yes. But what does that have to do with you exaggerating your

job?” Ben edged gently closer, his arm going around Reece’s shoulders

to pull him close so he could thread his fingers through the hair at the

back of Reece’s head.

“Well, I think I wanted to”—he frowned as he tried to find the

right words—“I think I wanted to make up for being gay?” He knew

the words were wrong as soon as he said them and shook his head.

“No, I didn’t mean that. I wanted to make up for the time I confused

them, for the time they couldn’t figure out who their son was anymore.

We lost a good year as son and parents because of it.” He swallowed.

“And then Ryan….”

Ben nodded encouragingly. “Go ahead; I’m not mad. I’m not a

dick and I can tell it’s a painful subject.”
